About John Wilkinson

‘I am self-taught but have always from an early age read anything to do with pigments, oils, mediums and the methods of the Old Masters, and also the techniques of a few contemporary artists I admire. I have also studied photography in detail.
I worked on colour-separation at the Sun Printers in Watford from school until I left at the age of 40 to become an artist supplying plant and flower paintings for a small London gallery. I also exhibited at the RHS shows and was awarded two RHS Gold Medals. When the gallery closed I worked as a freelance artist for various publishers, and for some galleries in the USA doing botanical paintings until arriving at Collins publishers, where I was given books to do on Moths & Butterflies, always an interest of mine, Trees and Mushrooms. I also wrote and illustrated The Artists Guide, covering all major techniques, for Dorling Kindersley.
Since retiring in 1999 I have painted any subject that interests me, with occasional commissions for books or paintings. I still paint  most days.
Except for commissions, I have never painted with the object of selling, but only to enjoy creating pictures and to give pleasure to the viewers.’
