Make your Mark – Drawing for Beginners

Make your mark, drawing for beginners. Join Artist Aly Kirby as she guides you through learning some basic drawing and mark making  skills,. This class is designed for those who would like to learn how to draw or who would like to return to art following a break.

On Your Mark- mark making -Intro to drawing

Artists often use mark making as a whole art project, or a piece for a larger project. It’s also a good way to warm up for other art and can be very meditative.

The aim is to use a range of relevant marks that produce textures and that can also depict perspective, depth and value. This is a useful exercise which can be applied to future art making eg painting/pastel/portrait and life drawing. We will be looking at the work of Rembrandt,Van Gogh and Hockney.

For the lesson you will be producing a piece of work inspired by the landscape and seascape line work of the above artists. Though he is most famous for his paintings, Van Gogh believed that drawing , based around simple mark making was “ The root of everything”

Using your reference material you are going to convert the image you have chosen purely into one that uses mark making and texture. We will be working in black media (ink, paint or biro on white cartridge paper.

Although images will be provided, it would be lovely if you could bring an image or photo of a landscape/seascape of your own to convert (you could work from a holiday photograph)
