Artist Profile – Neil Freeman

Neil Freeman is Leighton Buzzard Art Society’s membership secretary and is based in Wing. He took some time recently to tell us a little about his work.

How long have you been making art? How did you get into it?
Only in the last eight years on a regular basis, following retirement.

What media do you work in?
Watercolour, acrylic, and oil. The first two are fast to work in even if watercolour can be “tricky“. I like to “get on” with a painting.

Which artists do you admire?
Monet, Hockney, Van Gogh, and Turner.

Which subjects interest you? Why?
Landscape, animals, birds, and portraits.

Please tell us a bit about your work process – how do you approach a new artwork?
I usually do a very quick sketch, then on with the paint… It can be rather Impressionist.

Why did you join Leighton Buzzard Art Society?
It’s my local society, and my art teacher recommended it to me.

Do you have a top tip to share?
Look after your brushes!

Where do you usually work?
In my studio and plein air.

What are you working on at the moment?
I’m away in Wales at the moment, so I’m sketching some of the scenes there,

What’s your proudest achievement?
Selling paintings to people who are not friends or relatives!

What is your next learning goal?
To keep learning and not be too self critical.
