Artist Profile – Pauline Glover

Pauline Glover has been a member of Leighton Buzzard Art Society for many years. You will often find her smiling face selling raffle tickets at our events and she is a regular winner of our monthly competitions! She took a break recently to tell us a little about her work.

Can you tell us about your background in art?
I’ve been making art all my life. I usually work in watercolour, acrylic inks and acrylics. Once I found out watercolours could produce vibrant paintings I was hooked. I do enjoy mixed media incorporating inks and even tea and coffee! I like acrylics too and am just trying oils.

What’s your proudest achievement?
Completing a large 5’ x 4’6” commission acrylic painting of Welsh poppies.

Which artists do you admire?
Van Gogh, Stanhope Forbes, and Turner.

Please tell us a bit about your work process – how do you approach a new artwork?
I really enjoy painting seascapes, landscapes, still life, portraits, and mixed media. Once I decide I want to paint something, I sketch in pencil or watercolour/acrylic and just paint till it’s finished. My hand doesn’t let me paint continually these days, sometimes I finish in a day, but some paintings take several days.

Do you have a top tip to share?
Yes – there are no rules! I was taught very rigid rules but once I threw them out of the art box I really started to enjoy art!

Why did you join Leighton Buzzard Art Society?
To meet like minded people who are happy to share their knowledge. LBAS is the most friendly art club I have ever belonged to.

What are you working on at the moment?
I’m trying to paint a still life in oils. Oil painting is my next learning goal!

Where do you usually work? Do you listen to music while you’re working?
I have a small cabin in the garden and can escape for hours. Alexa provides whatever music I ask for!

Do you have a favourite paint colour?
Indigo.

If the National Gallery was on fire and you could save just one painting there, which one would it be?
The Fighting Temeraire by Turner.

You can see more of Pauline’s work at LBAS’s exhibitions and on our members’ webpages – or by joining in our monthly Art Together days!
